About Sally
Read MoreSally Mason FPSNZ and friend ( that's Sally on the right.....)
Sally combines her love of nature and flowers, her design background, and her love of creativity to produce images with a special touch. She photographs from the heart using her intuition and her deep understanding of why she responds to wherever she finds herself. Her images take on a very personal touch that reflect this. Sally enjoys the freedom of Impressionist photography and captures the very heart and soul of all that she photographs. ALL IMAGES ARE CREATED IN-CAMERA. No computer manipulation is involved. Sally photographs how she feels, WHEN she feels it. Sally is a popular and enthusiastic tutor who teaches photography workshops throughout New Zealand and overseas. She teaches alongside world renowned Canadian photographer Freeman Patterson on their New Zealand workshop. She delights in creative play within her camera – no computer manipulation is involved. Experimenting with a range of in-camera photographic techniques is included in the teaching programmes. Workshop participants are encouraged to widen their vision, to understand themselves more deeply, and to create images that express how they feel. They are guided to understand themselves more and to re-discover the child that is within all of us, to learn again to explore and play with innocence and freshness, and to value their intuition. “We see what we know, until we know how we are, then we see what we feel” Ernst Haas As well, Sally delights in creative play with prints, for herself and commissioned photomontage works for others. She has also taught classes and workshops in Photomontage – using photos to produce a visual story of a place, a special occasion, a holiday...... These are hands-on classes, with no computer involvement in the creation of these artworks. Sally has exhibited widely and her works hang in many private and corporate collections throughout New Zealand and overseas. She is a Fellow of the Photographic Society of New Zealand and a member of the Society’s Honours Board . She is a popular speaker on many occasions. For several years Sally lived at Rarangi Beach, Marlborough where she has got to know the windswept beach intimately. Recently she produced a book “ i am.... rarangi beach” in which evocative words and images speak to the reader, drawing them into a closer communication with the beach. A close association with Lochmara Lodge in Queen Charlotte Sound allowed her a deeper insight into this magical place, and she has written a book "The edge of discovery" about this very special part of New Zealand. Sally and Don now live in Nelson. Over the past few years, Sally and her husband Don Kelly have led groups of New Zealand photographers on trips to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada. Sally runs a 6 day workshop within the 3 week adventure. In July/August 2012 they led a group to South Africa and Namibia, with a week long workshop included at Kamieskroon. The 2014 group returned to eastern Canada - to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and unforgettable time spent on Newfoundland. 2016 saw the publication of another book: "wabi-sabi a way of seeing : a way of being". This is a subject Sally has been teaching more and more in her workshops, and its philosophy is the essence of her own photography. In 2017 she will run a wabi-sabi workshop in the Blue Mountains, Australia. See more details about the AWAKENING workshop on my workshops page.
